GATE – GreenComp as a Training and Education Framework for Sustainability

The GATE project builds upon the European sustainability competence framework GreenComp, which defines 12 key competences for sustainability across lifelong learning. While GreenComp provides a strong conceptual foundation, many educators and trainers find it abstract and difficult to apply in real learning contexts.

In response to the climate crisis and the EU’s commitment under the European Green Deal, there is an urgent need to integrate sustainability competences into education and training. GATE addresses this by making GreenComp more accessible, understandable, and practical for teachers, trainers, and curriculum designers.

The project brings together partners from France, Germany, Portugal, and Belgium to co-develop innovative learning tools, digital resources, and easy-to-use materials for sustainability education.

Objectives

  • Simplify and illustrate the GreenComp framework to enable trainers to easily understand and apply the 12 sustainability competences.
  • Provide relatable examples, narratives, and visual explanations that translate abstract theory into practical understanding.
  • Develop a digital library of pedagogical resources for educators, including learning capsules, competence cards, and multimedia content.
  • Experiment and test these tools with trainers through workshops and real-life educational settings.
  • Produce a European methodological guide to support the implementation of GreenComp in training environments.
  • Empower educators to foster responsible, critical, and future-oriented thinking in their learners.

Activities

  • Exploration and clarification of the GreenComp framework.
  • Co-design of learning tools and teaching materials.
  • Creation of an online repository of resources for all 12 competences.
  • Experimentation and feedback sessions with trainers in each partner country.
  • Capacity-building workshops and peer exchange events.
  • Development of pedagogical scenarios demonstrating GreenComp in action.
  • Drafting and refinement of a practical methodological guide.
  • Collaborative European learning network for sustainability competences.

Expected Results

  • A simplified and illustrated version of GreenComp that is accessible to the educational community.
  • A set of practical learning tools including competence cards, work aids, micro-learning modules, animations, and visual explanations.
  • An online resource library with at least 2 resources per competence and per country.
  • A collection of pedagogical scenarios (minimum 10 per country) applying GreenComp in real contexts.
  • A methodological guide in English and translated into partner languages (French, German, Portuguese).
  • Increased capacity of trainers to teach sustainability competences confidently.
  • A coherent European approach to sustainability education and competence development.
