Supporting practitioners to train migrants in the EU
In the current context of the influx of migrants and refugees into the European Union, the desire to achieve the socio-professional inclusion of this precarious public is reaffirmed year after year by the various European countries.
Better reception, better support and the fight against discrimination are the main lines of action recommended. They imply lifelong training of professionals and volunteers so that knowledge of this group, its specificities and its problems, the position to adopt is as accurate as possible and so as to offer quality support. Faced with the increase in the number of migrants in training activities, trainers and volunteers are asking for educational tools, methods and good practices to better guide this multifaceted public.
This desire to strengthen skills was identified among trainers and volunteers during the previous DIME strategic partnership (2015-2018): “Develop a reference framework and training modules to promote the inclusion of migrants”.
The consortium will develop two major products:

Supporting trainers and volunteers in taking into account the specificities of the migrant public when providing training (e.g. adopting an appropriate professional attitude and acquiring knowledge essential to achieving educational objectives: knowledge of migration phenomena, managing the cultural diversity of the group, understanding and taking into account traumas in particular.) The guide will be based on the contents of the three modules of DIME’s intercultural competence “Revisiting one’s migratory journey”, “Recognising diversity”, “Carrying out a collective project” and the associated pedagogical exercises, the animation of this theme being considered complex and sensitive.
- A pedagogical method allowing the trainers/volunteers to identify the significant transversal competences acquired by migrants in their country of origin and/or their migratory journey and to value them in order to promote their professional inclusion. Migrants need to be guided in this process and become aware that these transversal competences can be transferred from one sector to another.
- A better understanding by the trainers/volunteers of the migrant public outside the European Union and the need to apprehend in their entirety the problems encountered.
- Increased quality of interventions through the adoption of an appropriate professional attitude, the dissemination of good practices and the acquisition of specific knowledge to train and support the migrant population and to adapt, where necessary, to delicate situations through the provision of recommendations.
- A better awareness of educational teams and volunteers to identify and promote the skills of migrants, especially cross-cutting skills.
- An increase in the competences and skills of the trainers/volunteers by the possibility of widening their field of intervention to interculturality through the provision of content and pedagogical exercises.
- Harmonisation of trainer/volunteer practices towards the migrant public on a European scale.
- Shared expertise and knowledge across disciplines.
- Wide use of the tools developed in the DIME project.
