Promoting a comprehensive approach to language teaching and learning in schools
Schools play a crucial role in shaping young minds, especially during their most formative years. With pupils spending a significant part of their day in an educational environment, schools have the potential to become places of creative thinking, inspiration and responsibility.
Our project aims to support this transformation by integrating 21st century skills and cross-curricular digital tools into the foreign language classroom. At the heart of FLAG is a mobile application designed to make language learning engaging and interactive. By gamifying English language learning, we aim to help students preparing for their final exams to develop not only language skills, but also digital literacy, cultural awareness and environmental responsibility.
Our approach is based on the latest pedagogical principles and focuses on skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, ICT literacy and creativity. Through extensive research, including questionnaires completed by more than 400 students and teachers in the partner countries (Germany, Hungary and Turkey), we identified the key areas where digital innovation can significantly improve language teaching. The feedback confirmed a growing desire among students to use digital tools in their learning, while teachers expressed enthusiasm for integrating new technologies into their teaching.
Main project objectives:
- Modernise foreign language teaching: Introduce innovative teaching methods that make language learning more interactive, engaging and relevant for students.
- Develop a mobile learning application: Create a free, gamified mobile app to support English language learning, incorporating elements of environmental education and sustainable behaviour.
- Improve Digital Literacy: Equip students with essential 21st century skills such as ICT literacy, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.
- Support teachers with innovative tools: Provide teachers with modern resources and methodologies to better integrate digital tools into the language classroom.
Key project outputs:
- Mobile application: A fun, interactive tool for learning English, incorporating environmental education and promoting sustainable behaviour
- Academic publications: Highlighting the benefits of gamified learning and its positive impact on student motivation and engagement
- Digital Curriculum: Tailored to English language learning, offering a fresh approach to language teaching that is aligned with students’ real-world needs
By catering to the unique characteristics of Generation Z, who are digital natives, the FLAG project aims to make language learning more accessible, enjoyable and effective. Our app allows students to practice English anytime, anywhere, integrating learning into their daily lives through familiar digital devices. In doing so, we create a seamless blend of communicative language skills, cultural knowledge and digital literacy – essential components for success in today’s connected world.
Working with schools, teachers and parents, FLAG not only enhances language learning, but also prepares students to be proactive, environmentally conscious global citizens. Together, we are fostering a new generation equipped with the skills needed for both academic success and a sustainable future.
The project partnership is led by the Hungarian school Érdi SZC Kossuth Zsuzsanna Szakképző Iskola és Kollégiumm and consists of seven partners with complementary experience and skills in the field of language learning, digital developments, and school education from Germany, Hungary, and Turkey.
